Screaming out of Portland, White Orange is on the verge of releasing their first full-length record, a self-titled, grooved-out metal trance-rock opus.

Not really sure what else to say about them. After a few spins of the album that will be available on September 20th, it’s clear these guys like their psychedelic 70′s rock with an updated, sharp-edged bite to it. A recent vinyl picture disc single, the oddly named And This Is Why I Speak To you In Parables, provided a glimpse into what the full-length would bring.

Aside from the musical side of this band’s art, the actual artwork is also remarkable. There aren’t enough bands out there placing the emphasis on the visual presentation of their music in this downloadable, disposable age. The artwork for the album and the previously released single is in a word: tripped-out (OK, two words).

There are many comparisons to made sonically. Eagles of Death Metal, The Sword and Mastadon are a few of them, but even those don’t really describe this album. There’s a fuzzed-out, and in many cases, melodic, component to White Orange that isn’t necessarily present in the work of those other, fine bands.

OK, I promised three womanly rockers to you earlier in the week, and I’m here to deliver the third. First, we had San Francisco’s dream-popperTamaryn. Next up, we had the kinda scary, really hot EMA, and today, we have The Joy Formidable.

OK, The group isn’t all female, in fact, they’re a trio out of London. But, they’re led by the distinctive vocal stylings of Ritzy Bryan, and that’s where I’m focusing, whether it’s politically correct, or even fair to do so.

The group’s latest album, The Big Roar is phenomenal and has sent many towards comparisons to their fellow, English shoegaze rockers, My Bloody Valentine. Sure, the similarities are there, but this group is a bit more accessible and a tad less reverb-y than the eardrum splitting trail-blazers they’re so often compared to.

OK, yesterday I mentioned there are a few female rockers I’m really into now. That’s when I babbled on about Tamaryn. Today, onto the next one.

Erika M. Anderson, aka EMA, just released Past Life Martyred Saints, an album that isn’t giving up it’s spot in my car stereo very easily. She’s getting considerable attention, too. Though I’m not familiar with her previous band, Gowns, but I’m going to get caught up post-haste. I don’t really know how to describe her new album, but I’m hooked. Check these videos out and you’ll see and hear what I mean. The second video from the album, for the song “Milk Maid” has just been released, actually…Oh, go ahead and pick up the MP3 for it, also…

Sorry I haven’t been around for a while. Thankfully, things have been busy with my Dallas Observer and Best of Texas gigs. If you aren’t keeping up with me over on those outlets, I sure would appreciate it!

Back to the Ol’ Knob, though. In the past few months, I’ve become kinda creepily obsessed with a few females that dabble in the shoegazey, dream-pop, noise-rock realm. This week, I’ll introduce you to three of them. They may not be new to you, but they are new to me, so hopefully you’ll be as creepily enamored as I am after the next few days…The first one up is Tamaryn, a dream-pop power much in the way that Mazzy Star was in the 1990′s. Coming out of San Francisco, Tamaryn recently toured right through my hometown of Dallas (opening for the Ravonettes) without me even having a clue I would soon be drooling over her latest album, The Waves.

I’ll have some pics and thoughts from my SXSW trip for you guys tomorrow, but before then I just thought I’d share a little somethin’ somethin’ (a very random somethin’, at that).

I have mentioned my appreciation for the latest The Only Sons album, Steel Hearts, a time or two in the past, but I haven’t said much about the album that came out before that one. Actually, the album came out before these Tennessee boys were even called The Only Sons.

In 2008, The Only Sons were known as Ribbonpigeon, and their album, Young Lungs, featured the same excellent blend of country, rock, wit and spit. I encourage those of you who have recently been turned onto The Only Sons to make a point to check out Young Lungs.
