In this day and age, “Folk” is really hard to define. It’s as broad of a term as “Americana” or “Rock” is these days, really. It’s ok to have drums and electric instrumentation in folk these days without being termed “folk-rock”, even, for cryin’ out loud.
Whatever, the fact is that the new EP from North Carolina’s Megafaun, Heretofore, fits into all of the above listings. Using a baraque approach to their folk stylings, these former band mates of Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver), excel at not really fitting into anyone’s nice, neat little boundaries.
