I’m actually listening to David Gray’s new album, Draw The Line, as I type, and I really like what I hear so far. While the themes in the songs are a bit different from album’s of Gray’s past, the overall sonic vibe is pretty similar, and I am 100% fine with that. I don’t know if I am being lazy recently, because I really liked the comfy, almost nostalgic values of Deryl Dodd’s recent album also. I guess sometimes, I just like knowing that I have a sense of what’s in-store for me when I put a certain artist’s disc on. Obviously, there is a very thin line between simply stale and and dependably solid, and I am getting the impression that this new album fits into the latter category.
“Fugitive” (listen to the song below), an up-tempo number with a bright sonic vibe takes me back to Gray’s A New Day at Midnight disc, which is a good thing. “Nemesis” slows down the proceedings a tad with a softer, more sensitive feel that recalls much the White Ladder CD, which was Gray’s breakthrough record. So far, so good. It seems as though fans of Gray’s previous work will find something here to like quite well. That said, I’m not sure this album will turn doubters from the past into believers of the present (so I guess it’s a good thing that I dig the guy).
