The new album from Cory Chisel (Official / Myspace) is full of folk-rock goodness. Death Wont Send A Letter (Black Seal) contains effectively raspy vocals with slight nasally tones that recall a young Dylan, Springsteen or even Petty, depending on which song you are listening to or what mood you’re in perhaps. The album boasts quite the list of collaborators. Brendan Benson, Little Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler - all from Jack White-led projects (at one point or another) - gave a helping hand to the proceedings.
While folk-rock seems to be the dominant vibe on this collection that squarely focuses on tales of love in all of its forms, there are a few examples that showcase Chisel’s range in sonic sensibilities. Whether it’s the quieter, acoustic, campfire-style love, the 70′s pop feel (for which I am sure Benson was a huge influence) or the straight-up arena rock of the track “Longer Time At Sea”, Chisel makes it all blend easily into a singular sound that all seems to fit him quite nicely.
