Not to be redundant, I know I’m not the first blogger to discuss this, but the music world lost one of its greats recently. While much of the press dedicated to Jay Bennett’s passing has been and will continue to be, devoted to his feud with former Wilco-mate, Jeff Tweedy, the man was a genius, capable of transforming a song or arrangement from bland into something layered, complex and enthralling. His solo disc from late last year, Whatever Happened I Apologize, is also a reminder that to us all that Bennett didn’t need studio tricks or the opportunity to make a track as dense as it could possibly be at all times. Often-times quiet and most of the time, just downright pretty, this album is striking in its stark contrast to the work in which he made his name.
