Willie Covers, New Video’s and The O’s: Live from South Dakota, It’s Tuesday NIGHT!!!!
21 January 2009 in Local Music (D/FW), Music, Old School, Random, Texas Music, Video, You Tube, blah blah blah
You may be able to handle some of Willie Nelson's best songs, Matthew Houck, but that doesn't mean you can grow a beard like him, sir...
While I am spending a few days here in snowy Aberdeen, SD this week on business, I figured I would shoot a couple of things in your general direction.
- I am listening to the new Phosphorecent album that is entirely comprised of Willie Nelson covers. The disc, entitled, To Willie, is pretty great so far. Matthew Houck’s take on Willie gems such as “Reasons to Quit”, “Too Sick to Pray”, and “Walkin’”, among others are a bit more subdued than the originals, which is fine, as the pedal steel work on the album, specifically on “Walkin’”, is outstanding. I always appreciate it when an artist tackles material that is a bit of a departure and handles it with respect and artistry versus launching lame attempts at irony.
- Speaking of Outlaw covers, check out the new video for my wife’s future husband, Jackson Taylor. I dig the live footage and shots of Taylor hangin’ with Billy Joe Shaver and Jason Boland…

- While I will likely delve deeper into this subject at a later time, I am also digging the debut full-length album from Dallas act, The O’s. We Are The O’s is a solid offering from beginning to end. There are some obvious comparisons to The Avett Brothers in both the arrangements and vocals, but they are, without a doubt, their own unique brand and not mere imitators.
- I have blabbed about Joe Pug many times before. If you haven’t checked to see why it is that I have blabbed, check out this video below. It’s the winner of a contest where fans submitted videos of Pug’s “Nation of Heat” track from the EP of the same name.

I’m good with anything that relates to Billy Joe Shaver!!!
Well, Fitz, you’ll definitely like the video and the song, since its one Billy Joe’s finest creations. If you havent, check out Jackson Taylor. He is the best example of the latter day Outlaw that Billy Joe represents so well for the old school…
[...] I mentioned listening to Phosphoresent’s To Willie (Dead Oceans) album a couple of weeks ago. I liked it then, but I love it now. As it turns out, I am not the only one. No surprise there, as this album seems to supply a need that many of us have for one of these new, neo/alt- folkies to sink their teeth into something that is easy to grab and tightly hold onto. Tales of the wilderness, or snow or mythology and all that are great, but man, it’s hard to beat the simple genius and everyday heartache that Willie Nelson has provided for so many years. Thanks to Matthew Houck for recognizing that. Also, thanks to so many other great bloggers for handling this one…. [...]
