The Knob does Nashville…
14 August 2008 in Music, Random, blah blah blah
OK, I am gone on business again, and I am in Music City. I have been looking forward to this trip and thankfully, I have yet to be disappointed (except for bad wi-fi connection at my hotel). I used the early part of last night to hit a couple of the well-known Broadway Honky-Tonks before meeting up with this guy for the Leroy Powell show at 12th & Porter. After that show, we found a seat at Robert’s Western World (by taking the back entrance, just steps from the back door of the historic Ryman Auditorium), and enjoyed cheap food, cold beer and hot music (that was original of me to say, wasn’t it?). The place was packed and the house band tore through a mix of covers and originals, mainly covers. I will say that might be the lone disappointment of the night. The bands at all 3 Honky-Tonks I stopped at (Tootsie’s, Legend’s Corner & Robert’s Western World) leaned very heavily on covers. I am not sure if that is due to overly-long and lengthy sets, pandering to tourists, or a combo. Thankfully, seeing Leroy Powell shred the stage southern-style made up for that in spades. Lemme ask you a question. Have you been rocked lately? The answer is NO, if you haven’t seen this frequent Shooter Jennings collaborator live and in person. More on him later. I finished up my trip with a few business related appts, a little jamming to Dylan’s Bonde on Blonde (which was recorded in Nashville, btw) in my rental, and lunch with this guy, who let me in on some of the secrets that line the seedy underbelly of music-row.
BTW, I got this track by Glen Campbell singing a Green Day tune. I am not sure if it’s ironic (in an Alanis Morissette kinda way, maybe), or fitting that I got this sent to me while I am here, staying just off of Music Row…you be the judge.
