15 December 2007 in Music, Old School, Random, Video, You Tube, blah blah blah

I swear, I must be a glutton for punishment! The fact is, I got what I deserved.  I continue to click over to freakin’ CMT half expecting to see a video that might prove to be something other than stupid, generic, bland and amazingly manufactured.  Obviously I realized what a mistake that was after seeing this video by Craig Morgan (I almost didn’t want to specify the video for fear that people will watch and suffer the same pain that I endured).  Thankfully, I stumbled over to GAC (which isn’t much better, really) and caught what is one of my favorite videos of the recent past.  Lyle Lovett’s “South Texas Girl” video comes from his excellent album that was released earlier this year. It’s Not Big, It’s Large, is classic Lovett as it mixes Folk, Bluegrass, Gospel, Country AND Western into one collection.  This video is reminiscent of the video for “Hurt” by Johnny Cash as it combines older, vintage home movies of family members that have passed on with pictures and video of current family and life on the road.  The chief difference is that while Cash’s video hung heavy with the stark reality of his own sickness and death approaching, Lovett’s clips offer lighter, more playful remembrances of family and the promise of new life, as his current love (the “South Texas Girl,” presumably) is featured prominently.  So Craig Morgan, put down your blow dryer and hair-highlighting kit, and see what real songwriting and video production sounds and looks like by clicking “play” below.

  1. Not crazy about the Morgan video, but I have a soft spot for a cheesy, redneck song.

  3. I too have a soft spot for cheesy redneck songs, but even in that specific of a category, there is unique and just plain cheesy. Robert EArl Keen’s “Merry Christmas from the family”, Hank Jr’s “Family Tradition”, Travis Tritt’s “Country Club” are ones that come to mind.

  7. Thanks Bro.

Lyle just knows how to deliver and to make the listener (or viewer in this case) feel like he is telling them a story about himself…
