I wanted to get up on the internet here and start freakin’ out about how bands that are hard for critics to define are given a raw deal by many critics, radio stations, promoters and simple-minded top 40 fans. I am not going to do that though. After I started thinking about bands like Wilco, Slobberbone, The Drams, Reckless Kelly, The Bottle Rockets, and a recent new fave for me, Band of Horses, I realized that these bands have been plagued with questions about what “kind” of music they play and the bands that follow their non-conforming trails will no doubt suffer those same questions. I recently stumbled onto one such band that has already begun answering that question. The Beauty Shop is a unit from Champaign, Illinois who aims to just be a Rock band that happens to rock acoustically in many cases. John Hoeffleur, Ben Ucherek and Eric Fisher blend Lo-Fi, Indie, Country, and plain ol’ Rock to give the folks that love to pigeonhole bands a downright fit. Instead of going on and on, I am gonna let the band speak (and sing, I suppose) for itself. There is talk of a possible swing through the south for these guys, and I’ll keep all of my dirty south peeps up to speed.
