Sunset at this years Larry Joe Tayor Music Fest. That weekend made me want to start this blog over 4 months ago today.
Today marks the 4th Month-iversary for The Gobblers Knob. It doesn’t seem like so long ago that I was wondering how to celebrate the first month. To be honest, it has gone by very quickly. Thanks to those of you that have been checking in to view my ramblings. When I started writing the blog I wanted to highlight many of the local bands that I felt needed a brighter spotlight. I still feel that way, but as you may have noticed, I soon realized that bands from all over the country deserve the same shine every so often. DFW acts such as Mo Robson, The Von Ehrics and 100 Damned Guns, among many others from Denton to Flower Mound are immense talents and would thrive in any other competitive musical market. I hope the folks that have read the postings on these acts have checked out their myspace pages, bought their CD’s and seen them live as a result of hearing a song, seeing a video, or reading my thoughts regarding them on The Knob. The more I researched and sought out “left-of-center” bands, I realized that there are awesome, authentic and ground-breaking bands all over the state and country that need people to know about them. Bands like The Bois D’arcs (Muenster, TX), Ned Van Go (Nashville), Adam Hood (Alabama), Roman Candle (North Carolina), and Drew Kennedy (New Braunfels) are fighting the same fights and producing as great a product as anything out there, yet mainstream attention seems to elude them for some strange reason. My goal is not to solve anything or to figure out what the “strange reason” is, but to make sure their names and sounds get out there, to the people that want to hear it. If you are reading this blog, you WANT to find out what’s out there beyond the boundaries of your FM dial and the sale rack at Target. Sunny Sweeney is about to hit BIG, and I hope that as you see her videos and appearance on future award shows you’ll say “Hey, I read about her way back when on the Gobblers Knob!” Like I have said before, please let me know about bands and artists that you think should be covered more, or that you may think I am missing out on, I am sure there are a ton. As for how I will be celebrating, please see the video below. As much as I love a good, no cover charge, cheap, beer-fueled night at Adair’s, I cannot resist the urge to relive the hot, sweaty, big-pickle filled nights of couple skating and my mom picking me and my boys up at 9 on Friday nights when the skating rink closed down.
