Let’s make blog…all night long!!

As I have been browsing around I have noticed many great blogs.  I find that the best “music” blogs do much more than simply copy and paste from other blogs or magazines, the blogger gives you a piece of themselves, along with the information that the blogger feels you should be aware of. This is what I try to do as well, and I hope you all get that from me.  Below are some blog-items I have found recently:

  • Cindy over at Fine Line Live loves Macon Greyson.  I knew that so I sent her something I spotted on them.  This is her giving me a shout-out as well as educating us all on the greatness that is Macon Greyson.
  • The Austin American Statesman has a fantastic entertainment web-site with an equally fantastic music section.  In the Austin Music Blog we get good news about a Gobblers knob fave, The Mother Truckers.
  • An interesting blog that I found on WordPress is called Iceland Spar.  It covers a bit of everything and has a team of contributors.  In this music post they discuss Steve Earle’s recent Letterman performance as well as the “turn” he has taken musically for his upcoming CD.  I think it’s an interesting read, but I couldn’t disagree with them more.  I like it when artists of Earle’s caliber switch gears and try something new (he is sporting a new look in the video they posted as well).  I like that he is hoping to make a political album (which is his usual gig) without asking for us to over-take the White House (not his usual).
  • The Country Music blog The 9513 covers every base of Country music. One day he is telling us how Garth’s new single is so-so, and the next day he is quoting The Knob on various interviews.  His daily summaries are invaluable when it comes to cramming tons of info in a timely manner.  He links to and quotes great blogs that have become regular stops in my browsing time.

I hope these hints give you something to do on days where you’ve read The Knob to its utmost.  Keep checking back here or I’ll know you have stopped!!!!!

Yes, it’s great when artists try out new things, especially when it goes well. Steve Earle’s foray into straight bluegrass, for example, turned out brilliantly. But you have to admit, sometimes the new things turn out badly. And Steve’s latest song is bad. The Revolutions Starts Now was a great protest album firstly because it ROCKED, but also because there were no songs called “Let’s Impeach The President” (hey Neil Young, pay attention). It was a scathing commentary on the current political scene couched in simple, honest stories, not didactic tripe. “City of Immigrants,” depsite its good intentions, is didactic tripe. It’s a moral without a story, and that’s just bad songwriting. Here’s hoping that the rest of the album is better.

Thanks Colin,

I agree with your asessment of the difference between commentary and being hit over the head, ala Neil Young. However, I still think at worst, “City of Immigrants” is a nerdy, way-too-idealogical tribte to a city that Earle seems to think he discovered and is letting the rest of the wolrd know that …gasp..New York has a diverse population. I still would not put it into the “Tripe” category (because I really hate tripe, had it once, never again!!)
