The “Lost Boy” has found his way to being an amazing artist.
Here on The Knob I generally try to keep from writing about many of the Texas/Red Dirt scene’s bigger players or more well-known acts. Outside of Bruce Robison, Chris Knight, Dale Watson and Reckless Kelly, I have steered clear of the “big boys” due to the fact that there are tons of things written about them already and I often am not able to offer anything new on the Cross Canadian’s, Randy Rogers , Kevin Fowlers and Jason Bolands of the world outside of the fact that I love them as much as any real Texas music fan. I say all of that to say that I have something totally unoriginal and rehashed to say….Bleu Edmondson is pretty awesome! He has a new album, Lost Boy, coming out soon and it looks to be a rockin’, but thoughtful, hard-charging, but introspective new disc. The previous statement might ring a little odd, but trust me, Edmondson has developed a catalog of tunes that create a difficulty for anyone trying to place him into a nice, neat and convenient category and this new collection only makes it harder for somone to do that. He is as much “Texas Singer-Songwriter” as he is Rock Star. Many of the songs, such as “Jesus is Crying” or “Last Last Time” could be tear-stained letters written to someone close during the dark, drunken hours of the night as much as they are Springsteen-style anthems to be cranked loud from your chevy muscle car with the windows rolled down. Edmondson has taken the considerable leap from being “the guy that sings “$50 and a Flask of Crown” to a Steve Earle-type rebel who is building a catalog on top of what has become an anthemic tune, much the way Earle did after hitting big with the timeless “Guitar Town.“ Please go to Lone Star Music, listen to samples of the songs and pre-order this. This disc comes at a point for Edmondson where he could’ve easily penned something like “$60 and glass of jack” just to get back on the radio. Instead he is showing us that while “..anything can happen on a Texas Friday night- if you don’t mind your manners – if you don’t mind a fight,” it may not have to be the same thing over and over again.
