Need a weekend to recover from this weekend???
15 June 2007 in blah blah blah, live gigs
1100 Springs rawks the Non-ky Tonk!!
It happens pretty regularly here. In fact, one look through the Observer or DMN Weekend guide and you should be able to plan a fairly non-stop weekend of great bands and great venues. This weekend is hoppin’. Mo Robson is playing Friday night at Adair’s and Saturday as a part of a very worthy cause, The Ride for Reid. I have mentioned Mo and his band before. He writes from personal experience about times of transition, incarceration, and inebriation (go to his myspace page and download “Rollin’ Down This Highway” & ”Good Morning Warden” to see what I mean). There isn’t a better place to see him than Adair’s and not a better band to see at Adair’s than his. Another band I have mentioned previously, The Von Ehrics, will also be playing a weekend, metroplex-crossing bill. Friday in Dallas at the Double Wide and Saturday at the Wreck Room. I can’t imagine that the proprietors will want to keep the Wreck Room open (it’s closing soon) after The Von Ehrics are done ripping it up and leaving trails of PBR behind, so they may one day find their way back to the Western gate that is Ft. Worth.
Saturday brings a day of honky-tonkin’ in places that aren’t honky-tonks (yep, that’s what I said). Saturday afternoon, Dale Watson (another Gobbler Knob alumnus) will be playing a free (I am so f-ing cheap) in-store gig at Bill’s before his not-so free (but worth it, if you’re not cheap) gig at Love & War Plano. After Watson clears the aisles, Max Stalling will be introducing the world to his latest effort, “Topaz City,” at 5pm. For moochers like me that will spend more in gas money than he would pay in cover charges to begin with, this is a great opportunity to really “cash in”. Good thing I saved the money though because that very same night at another “Non-ky Tonk” (for real, I just made that up, I am awesome), The Weary Boys will be opening for everyone’s favorite DFW Country-Before Country-was-Cool band 1100 Springs at the Granada Theatre in Dallas. This is one of the most “I can’t believe they don’t play together 5 times a week!” pairings. They both keep it as real as it can possibly be kept and both bands are as comfortable singing about Saturday night sins as they are Sunday morning hymns (I came up with that without even trying, sorry, I’m on a roll and you should buckle up now if you haven’t already).
Regardless of where you go or who you see, bring a bill or two for the tip jar, the merch booth or both (please, because I need someone to make up for me, thanks).
