Sunday Evening Comin’ Down

Every Sunday night 95.9 The Ranch hosts the “Ranch Roadhouse” live from Billy Bob’s.  Each week, the broadcast features a few artists from the Texas/Red Dirt scene, as well as some outside of the area, as they may be passing through on tour.  Luckily, this past Sunday night we had a mix of the two.  Alabama native Adam Hood along with current resident of L.A., Ted Russell Kamp, joined Texans Magee Payne and Shy Blakeman on the bill for an evening of free story-telling and acoustic music.  This was my first time to attend this weekly event, as usually I would be at Shiner Sunday and not wanting to make the trip from Plano to the Stockyards at such a time.  However, this is one of those chances that I have talked about recently where you get in free, park free and even have the chance to hang out and chat with the artists on the bill that night.  Sunday night provided a rare opportunity to hear the stories behind many of the songs from each of these artists in as quiet and intimate of an environment that Billy Bob’s could offer (it was on the smaller, dance floor stage vs. the main stage).  I also felt lucky due to the fact that I chose to come on a night where 3 sure-fire future big name headliners were being showcased in Hood, Blakeman, and Kamp.  As much as a Friday or Saturday Night at Billy Bob’s can be termed a “true Texas night on the town” for its wild and crazy potential, so too can it be said of Sunday nights there, but for the opposite reason.  Friday and Saturday you’re just getting started and revving up, while on Sunday you pull back a little as your comin’ down (thanks Kris Kristofferson).
